S2 E56: A Survivor’s Experience with CBD with Adrian Treadway

At Making Headway Podcast, we love to talk with people about different tools in their recovery toolbox. In today’s episode, we talk with TBI survivor Adrian Treadway. She shares her experience with using CBD as a recovery aide. Adrian has found CBD assists with pain, sleep, focus, and mental clarity. Learn tips from Adrian, the CBD connoisseur, on how she found the best CBD product for her.

In this episode:

  • Adrian survived a TBI that caused a subdural hematoma in her left frontal and temporal lobes resulting in a craniotomy in 2016

  • Recovery is a process and you learn as you go

  • Adrian went to rehab at TIRR: The Challenge Program: https://memorialhermann.org/services/tirr-challenge-program

  • Both Adrian and Eryn had medication side effects that impacted their mental health post injury

  • Adrian found CBD to be helpful for her headaches and light and sound sensitivity

  • Adrian discusses her experience with CBD and other cannabinoids.  This show is not medical advice.

  • She experimented with a lot of different products with different cannabinoids before finding the right ones

    • CBD is legal in all 50 US states.  Different states allow different types.  CBD and many other cannabinoids are not psychoactive.

    • CBD has the entourage effect meaning it encourages the other cannabinoids to work.  Adrian has found

      • CBN- to have a sedative effect and helps with pain

      • CBG- helps with gut health; an appetite stimulant and has effects on the brain gut connection meaning it can help with mental clarity

      • Full spectrum CBD will have the above strains among others

      • Isolate is just the single cannabinoid on the label

      • Broad spectrum has the potential to have THC

      • Need to carefully investigate your product to find what is right for you and the state you live in

    • Ask for a COA, certificate of authenticity- will tell you levels of cannabinoids.  Look for those free of or less than 0.3% THC to not have any psychoactive effects.

      • Some companies will divulge levels of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals as well

    • Book: Weed Mom by Danielle Simone Brand

    • We recover loudly so those behind us don’t have to suffer in silence (33ish)

    • There are different ways to take CBD: pills, vapor, ingestion, sublingual, topically.  All routes have different effects.

    • You should be open with your healthcare provider about what you are taking and your goals.  If you are considering modifying prescriptions, please discuss with your provider.

  • CBD is not the end all be all.  It is a tool to have in your toolbox.
